Diagram 015 – Key Of David
A most mysterious artefact in scripture is the ‘Key of David’ whose function and purpose is not explicitly stated. A ‘key’ is always going to unlock something but what is unlocked? The answer is access to ‘truth’ and ‘understanding’.
The Key of David is mentioned only twice in all scripture. The first occasion details the key as being ‘of the house of David’ (please see previous diagram for more details):
Isaiah 22:22 The key of the house of David I will lay on his shoulder; so he shall open, and no one shall shut; and he shall shut, and no one shall open.
The second occasion in Revelation 3:7, however, omits the ‘house’:
Revelation 3:7 “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, ‘These things says He who is holy, He who is true, He who has the key of David, He who opens, and no one shuts and shuts, and no one opens”.
The omission of the ‘house’, in this second reference, speaks of the relocation of the presence of God from the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem to the heart of the believer. The Body of Christ has become the temple of the Holy Spirit since the sacrifice of Jesus and the fulfilment of the Law .
At its simplest level, therefore, the key (of David) grants access to the place where there is teaching. Truth is taught in the ‘temple’. Please see next diagram for further ‘wisdom’.
