No one expected such a beginning. Rather than making a grand, high-profile entrance, Jesus chose an understated and temporary miracle—so discreet that the master of the feast did not even know who had performed it, and the wine itself was soon consumed. Yet John calls this His first sign because it pointed beyond the miracle to a profound truth: the transformation of water into wine foreshadowed how Christ’s blood would fulfil, rather than merely replace, the Mosaic Law and establish a better covenant. In John’s third sign miracle, Jesus heals the man at Bethesda on the Sabbath—raising an important question: had He broken the Sabbath? The answer is not straightforward, especially after Jesus says in John 5:17 that He and His Father have been working. Since Jesus could not lie and did not break the Law, how should this apparent confession be understood? One compelling explanation is that Jesus was working within the greater “week” of seven thousand years, as reflected in 2 Peter 3:8. If so, the sign miracles in John may belong to a wider prophetic pattern, reaching toward the consummation of the Christian Age.
